Computer-Aided Learning for Managing Stress (CALMS)

Learning to CALM yourself in stressful situations


Do everyday activities feel stressful for you?

Do you often feel stressed out when trying something new?

Do you wish it were easier to shake the stress off?


CALMS is a new experimental treatment at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. It is designed for two people who are important to each other, one of whom is between the ages of 13 and 30.

The purpose of the study is to see if this treatment can help young people with changes in their mental health learn to lower the stress they experience.


What's Involved?

Screening Interview

  • About 3-4 hours to see if this study is a good fit

Baseline Assessments

  • 2.5 hours for you; 1.5 hours for your family member(s)
  • Interview and questionnaires
  • 3 minute measure of your heart rate while sitting quietly
  • 5 minute audiotape of your family member(s) talking about you
  • 10 minute videotaped interactional task

Treatment Sessions

  • 12 family sessions (1 hour each) over 3-4 months
  • Learning to lower your heart rate while playing video or other games
  • Learning to interact with your family member(s) to lower stress

Three Follow-Up Assessments

  • 2-2.5 hours for you; 1-1.5 hours for your family member(s)
  • After sessions 4, 8, and 12
  • Interview and questionnaires
  • 3 minute measure of your heart rate while sitting quietly
  • 10 minute videotaped interactional task (after last session only)

 

Payments

You will be reimbursed $35 for the screening interview, $35 for the baseline assessment, $30 for the second assessment, $35 for the third assessment, and $40 for the final assessment.

If you complete all assessments you will be paid a total of $175.

Your family member(s) will receive $25 for the baseline assessment, $15 for the second assessment, $15 for the third assessment, and $25 for the final assessment.

If your family member(s) complete all assessments, s/he (they) will be paid a total of $80.
