Community Education

Understanding Psychosis & Responding to Early Signs of Risk

We offer free training and consultation for anyone who works with or cares about adolescents and young adults by our clinicians and researchers who specialize in recognizing and treating young people at risk for or diagnosed with serious mental illnesses.

Our Target Audience Includes:
Primary care physicians, school nurses, mental health professionals, teachers, guidance counselors, university and school administrators, resident advisors, youth workers, community leaders, clergy, police, and anyone who interacts regularly with youth.​

What You Will Learn

  • Basic biology and experience of psychosis.
  • Myths about psychosis. The importance of challenging stigma.
  • Treatments for individuals with psychosis and their families.
  • The early signs of risk for serious mental illness
  • What to do if you are concerned someone may be at risk
  • What families and schools and work settings can do to help
  • Available resources

Structure of Training

  • Time: Trainings can hit the highlights in 15 minutes or cover topics in more detail over 1.5 to 2 hours 
  • Location: As of now, all of our trainings will be held online via zoom

Training Materials May Include

  • Handouts on the early signs of psychosis, screening questions
  • Handouts on possible accommodations for school, work, or home to help reduce distress, increase functioning, and prevent progressive illness or impairment
  • Video of youth and families talking about the early signs and what was helpful/not helpful during the early phases
